A NOTE OF THANKS

To all my friends who gave so generously and to all those who were part of SPIN FOR KIM, to all the instructors who gave of their time - Lori, Bryan, Patti, Michael, Abbie, Jason and to Fotis for coming in and making it really special. To all of you who have supported me with well wishes and prayers and especially to Allison Geller and Sunny Allen.

I would like to thank each and every one of you for giving so kindly and enabling me to begin my recovery from this terrible disease. I know I have a long road ahead, thanks to you all I am on that road.

Allison Geller and Sunny Allen are two of the most special people one could ever meet and I am extremely fortunate to have them in my life.

Allison, thank you so very much for organizing SPIN FOR KIM. Without your hard work and caring attitude this would never have taken off - I appreciate it. From the phone call I received, during the first hour of the ride, I knew everyone was having fun. Your are a great person who I am very lucky to call friend.

Sunny - what can I say? When I was ready to give up you were there to pick me up. Sunny has been and continues to be my pillar of strength, when things get tough she is always there for me. Those of you who know Sunny, know what a kind and giving person she is, one of a kind. I don't think I could ever give back what she has given me. I know without her I would not have been able to begin this journey on this road. Sunny, thank you for your unconditional kindness and support.

Thank you all so very much for your support, prayers, generosity and kindness during this time, I sincerely appreciate you all.

Fondly

Kim

IMPROVE AN OLDER ADULT’S WALKING SKILLS

Senior JoggerThe shuffling gait of many unfit older adults has long been observed, and now the root causes of this gait have been studied. This study attempted to discover if  the gait dysfunction seen in  many older adults  is a conscious choice on their part or is an involuntary result to a specific joint deficiency.

The researchers found that the gait modifications were not voluntary and seemed to be due mainly to weakness in the ankle plantar flexors (calf muscles).  The researchers found that with lack of use, the ankle plantar flexors were unable to sufficiently raise the heel while moving about. Without that strong propulsion, the older adult is not able to get sufficient lift to raise the foot off the ground and swing it past the stabilizing (fixed) foot, hence the shuffle. The study was unable to say with certainty the effect of the hip flexors and extensors had on the gait variations that came from those leg muscles.

The take-home message of this study seems to be that weak plantar flexors can adversely affects the ability of older adults to walk normally and might be a factor that predisposes that shuffling adult to fall. So: add those heel lifts to your routine!

WEIGHT TRAINING ALONE CAN HELP INCREASE
FLEXIBILITY IN ELDERLY WOMEN

Big Biceps! As the population of men and women over 60 years of age continues to grow the importance of preventative health care becomes increasingly important.  Past research has shown that decreased flexibility, strength, and aerobic fitness are a result of decreased activity, not just a result of  the aging process. This suggests that if one maintains an active lifestyle as they age they may have less  loss of strength, flexibility and aerobic fitness.

In a study group of elderly women at the University of Sao Paulo, (Brazil) research showed that weight training alone increased muscle and joint flexibility.  This study gives great support to the importance of consistent exercise, and resistance training for all ages.
