MEN...LOSE SLEEP AND GAIN FAT

Man sleepingHey guys, are you getting enough sleep? Are your love handles developing a life of their own? There may be a connection!

According to new research conducted at the University of Chicago, as men age they sleep fewer hours per night and also tend to spend less of the night in a state of deep (slow wave) sleep. During deep sleep, growth hormones are produced that help the body to regulate levels of body fat. When growth hormone levels fall, the accumulation of flab begins in earnest.

At least part of the problem is that older men tend to spend less time in deep sleep than younger men. Men in their early to mid 20's spend approximately 19% of their sleep time in deep sleep. With age, the amount of sleep per night also tends to diminish; sickness and prescription drugs can also affect sleep patterns.

To increase both the quantity and quality of your sleep, here are some suggestions from the researchers:

  • Consistent exercise habits encourage more deep sleep;
  • Avoid caffeine alcohol, carbonate beverages and sugar in the afternoon and evening;
  • Avoid websurfing late at night
  • Go to bed and get up on a consistent schedule (even on days off!)
