I've wanted to write
about my buddy Marsha for years. The tall blonde who uses the "orange" weights
at body sculpting classes has battled a brain tumor for years.
She's had two craniotomies, radiation and I forget how
many sessions of chemo. And yet she radiates strength, warmth and an unbelievable sense of
humor that makes you shake your head with admiration.
"Sure I get up scared every day of my life,"
Marsha, 55, admits. "But what good is that going to do me? You put one foot in front
of the other and march!
"I consider myself fortunate that I've beaten the
odds. I outlived the numbers the doctors gave me initially. And I consider myself
fortunate to have an excellent support system including my significant other, Bo, my
family and friends and of course the people at MBS who have offered me encouragement along
the way."
The road has been rough, very rough for Marsha at
times. Chemotherapy--eight months of it last time--can be extremely debilitating.
"I worked out whenever I could and I think that
made me strong both in body and in spirit," she says. "I'm on line with other
cancer patients across the country who were also on chemo. Many of them were so weak they
couldn't go to work.
"I do credit my lifelong commitment to exercise
for helping me deal with this demon. I know it's a horrible disease with a grim prognosis,
but I count my blessings that I've managed to enjoy my life despite the disease."
It would be trite to say that Marsha's message is
inspirational or that indeed, she's an inspiration herself. All I know that the bunch of
us who love her dearly count OUR blessing that he have in our midst. And when I get crazed
by some trivial problem I close my eyes and chant my mantra: "Remember Marsha."
