REJOICE AND REJUVENATE
By Lynn Allison
We've turned FORWARD the hands of time on our clocks,
watches and VCR's. That's a Spring ritual. But another Spring ritual we may want to
include is turning BACK the hands of time in our lives.
Spring, to me, spells rejuvenation--a time to think young and think
new. Although in Florida we don't really see the physical signs of new growth budding
through leftover snow, or smell the fresh blossoms on the trees, we can take stock of our
own lives and put some Spring into our step!
I'm always inspired by the many over 50 crowd at MBS who exercise regularly and with
enthusiasm and vigor. They've learned one of the most important keys to anti-aging--taking
care of your body. But there are other ways you can feel more youthful. For some of us,
scheduling a spa day is a wonderful way to feel refreshed. A new, colorful wardrobe or
hairstyle makes you feel younger than Spring.
Changing your workout--can't wait to try the Salsa Aerobics class--is another way to open
new horizons.
If you look on the Internet, more folks are planning very active
summer vacations--biking through France or hiking the Canadian Rockies are just two of the
many resources open to all of us.
I asked one of South Florida's leading anti-aging doyennes for her personal
tips for staying younger, longer.
"I think laughter is the most important anti-aging secret for me," says
60-something Julia Busch, author of Positively Young: How to Live, Love, Laugh and Let
Go! (Anti-Aging Press).
Busch, who does look and act decades younger than her years, shares these tips for MBS
members.

"You can turn back the hands of time put the spring back in your step in just 30
days," she says. "Here are some of my favorite ways to regenerate and
rejuvenate."
* Bounce a little when you walk. Put that extra ooomph into your step. This
improves circulation and makes you look younger too.
* Find a picture of a younger you. Remember how you felt and make those feelings a
part of you now.
* Forgive people you think have injured you. It releases happy hormones that make
you feel younger and lighter.
* More importantly, forgive yourself for anything that is weighing you down and
preventing that "bounce." Once you stop feeling guilty, you regain happiness
that shines through.
* Learn to laugh and laugh a lot. It eases stress and lowers blood pressure.
* Smile, it lifts the face naturally and presses internal buttons to make you feel
younger.
* Think of yourself as younger. When we have an set image of how we should look at
a certain age, we tend to act it out.
* Do something nice for yourself. A little pampering goes a long way to make you
feel more youthful. Schedule a massage, facial or even a simple manicure.
* Have something to look forward to. No one feels old with something exciting to
do. Plan a night out with a friend or buy tickets to a rock concert! Break out of your
rut!
* Reassess your wardrobe, hairstyle and makeup with a younger you in mind. When you
look younger, you feel younger. Consult with a good hair stylist and makeup artists who
can assist in determining your new, youthful look.
* Hang out with young people. The enthusiasm and attitude rubs off. Take a bunch of
neighborhood kids to the zoo for an exciting afternoon for all of you!
* Lonely? Consider a pet, join a group, or volunteer. Loneliness is aging.
* Moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes a day is the greatest anti-aging
remedy. Julia uses a mini-trampoline called a Rebounder to stay aerobically in shape.
Walking, swimming or biking are fine.
* Go dancing! There are many groups available for line dancing or even ballroom
dancing with assigned partners. You'll feel younger than springtime tripping the light
fantastic!
* Drink fresh, pure water 8-10, 8 ounce glasses daily. Dehydration quickly wrinkles
the face and neck, and your memory flies out the door without enough H2O.
* Log in enough ZZZZZs. Even a little kid feels old and cranky without enough
sleep.
* Consider a natural facelift, do-it-yourself acupressure can tighten your face and
neck with just finger pressure and simultaneously works systemically to tone up the
internal organs. Gently press your temples, around the eyes and around the chin and jaw
line.
* Treat yourself to a peppermint footbath every now and then. It feels wonderful,
brightens your outlook and makes you feel like dancing.
* A warm relaxing Epsom salt or lavender aromatherapy bath can lift away aches and
pains and the blues. You'll feel refreshed!
* Eat protein to rebuild your body, include lots of fresh fruits and veggies that
contain anti-aging antioxidants, like Vitamins A-C-E and selenium. These include primarily
green and orange colored produce.
* Read a sexy novel. Turn on those hormones by getting involved in a romantic
interlude--even if it's through fictional characters.
* Hang upside down! If you can do a head stand, go for it! And if you can't, lie
across the bed and let your head hang over the side. This brings blood to your head which
helps prevent wrinkles and brings circulation to the brain.
* Visit a nursing home. You'll come away feeling grateful for your own good health
and youth!
* Stand tall. Proper posture makes you look and feel years young
