MICHAEL'S MEETS RODNEY
by Lynn Allison
A bunch of MBS members and yoga enthusiasts traveled
to Miami recently to attend a workshop led by legendary guru, Rodney Yee.
Leslie, Andy, Ed, Gerry, Annick
and I joined about 70 other South Florida yogis for four hours of training interspersed
with common sense philosophy gleaned by the youthful Yee through his practice.
The most remarkable thing yoga taught me was how when I change
my attitude in a relationship, the relationship changes, Yee recalled. Yee, who has
hosted dozens of yoga videos and is world renowned for his expertise told us that
hed been battling with his father for years.
We could barely be in the same room
together, Yee said. And then one day I realized that if I shifted my anger and
let his words pass over me instead of into me, I would no longer be affected. This shift
brought us closer together.
He also emphasized seeking middle ground in both our poses and life.
If you are in a pose and your left leg is
hurting because it is carrying the burden of your weight, mentally and physically shift
the weight to other parts of the body to alleviate the pressure, he said. This one
precious line offered to me anyway, a philosophy of life.
We sometimes feel that we are carrying the weight of the world on
our shouldersespecially around tax time! If we learn to delegate our
responsibilities to others, we can dilute everyday stress and pressure.
I think we all came away from the seminar feeling pretty good and
thanking Rodney Yee for sharing so much of his personal journey with us.
