NUTRITION FOR THE 21st CENTURY
by Lynn Allison

Weve got a new service at MBS, a nutritional consultant
who will help fine tune your fitness program from the inside out.
I feel like part of the family already, says
Catherine Mabru, 42, a Parkland resident and MBS member.
Mabru is a registered dietitian and founder of R.D. 2000
Inc., a nutrition oriented service that provides information on weight control, diabetes,
prenatal nutrition, food allergies and a host of other conditions.
I have been a dietitian for a little over fifteen
years, with a Florida state hospital, Doral Saturnia International Spa and now in private
practice, says Mabru who also gets referrals from both HMOs and PPOs she is
contracted with.
It was always my dream to become an independent
counselor, Mabru says. When she first studied nutrition at the University Pierre and
Marie Currie in Paris and later at Florida International University, most dietitians
worked in a hospital setting.
I guess I was a pioneer, she says. Mabru, married
to Allan who is an engineer has two children. She will be available to MBS members who may
call the front desk to set up appointments either at the club or at Mabrus office at
Sandalfoot Plaza Drive.
The consultations may require laboratory work to determine
what food program would be best suited.
Sometimes people are diabetic and are not aware of the
problem, Mabru explains. I will gear a food plan that is tailored to their
specific needs.
Along with the private consultations, Mabru will provide some
free lectures on Thursday nights for an hour and answer questions.
Mabrus personal approach to nutrition and weight
control is everything in moderation.
When I want something sweet at night, I have a good
piece of chocolatethe best, she says. Definitely not Hersheys but
always Godiva!
The native of the French West Indies is fluent in English,
French and Spanish. She met her husband at school. It was he who encouraged her to join a
gym.
At first I was insulted, she says. I
thought he was critical about my body. But once I started working out, I realized how good
I felt. Hed always been physical as a child, so we are a perfect match. I take care
of the inside and he prods me to take care of the outer me!
Mabrus greatest thrill is helping her clients reach
their goals.
It gives me great satisfaction, she says.
Mabrus technique includes keeping track of your food
intake.
People arent aware of what they are eating,
she explains. A food diary helps you focus on how muchor how littlefood
you are ingesting each day.
She says that the biggest problem in America is excess.
We need to be more disciplined in our eating
habits, she says. There is no miracle pill. You simply need to put less food
in your mouth and increase your activity.
Mabru will be on board May 1 to help you reach your food and
fitness goals. She will be available initially at the club two days per week, one day time
and one late afternoon.
Initial visits will be up to one hour in length with follow
up visits up to a half hour long. Fees may be billed to your insurance company if you can
obtain a referral with an authorization number from your primary care physician.
