It unfortunately happens to most newcomers, but it
has probably happened to all of us at one time or another. And its partly due to
something I like to call, The Domino Effect. What is it?
Just think back to the first time you decided on getting fit. You
were all set to mold your body into a god/goddess-like status. Yet you had no idea where
to start. So, you probably ended up watching someone who looked like they knew what
they were doing. And then you went and did exactly what they did.
The worst part about this method of training is that
most likely, you wont have any idea on whether or not you are doing the exercise
correctly. To make matters worse, someone else is probably watching you, (thinking that
you look like you know what you are doing.) They will follow your example. And
someone will follow their example. And so on...and so on...and so on... It takes only one
person to set off a chain reaction to disaster.
This domino effect will not lead you to your ultimate
goal of looking and feeling fit. It wont help you to learn the proper form,
coordination, breathing or balancing techniques either. (It will probably lead you to a
visit to the doctors office.)
The key to any type of weight training program is to become
knowledgeable about what you are doing and learn how to do it correctly without injuring
yourself.
If you are just starting out, take things very slowly...AND ALWAYS
ASK FOR HELP!!! Never feel embarrassed or intimidated. Because we have all been there one
time or another. Someone once mentioned to me that foolish people dont ask
foolish questions...foolish people just dont ask questions!
Anytime you are unsure of an exercise or not quite certain about how
to operate a particular exercise machine, seek out help from a floor trainer or a personal
trainer. It is always much better to be informed by a certified, well-trained
professional, than to experiment on your own. There are many ways to achieve
our fitness goals. Asking for help, from time to time, should be at the top of your list.
