HOW OLD ARE YOU REALLY?
By Michael Papamichael

That is the question being asked with the launch of the new Fitness Assessment tool, Fitness Age LogoFitnessAge being unveiled right here at MBS sometime in late May. This new web based computer program looks beyond a person's chronological age to give them a clear picture of their fitness levels and their FitnessAge.

According to health professionals, after reaching the age of 21, a person's chronological age has very little relevance to their overall health and fitness. The aging process is greatly influenced by a person's eating habits, lifestyle and level of activity.

Here at Michael’s Body Scenes, we are recognized as one of the most innovative and leading operators of quality athletic clubs. With our commitment to offering our members the highest standard of operations and the latest fitness technology, our partnership with FitnessAge will bring to the residents of Boca Raton and the surrounding area, the latest fitness testing technology in the market place.

A health club professional administers the FitnessAge assessment and through a series of physical tests and oral questions, the web based computer program--using patented algorithms, can tell a person how they compare to the "norm" for their age group. Ultimately the program produces a comparison of their chronological age to their "fitness age." The club professional can also print out customized results and prescribe a fitness program to help enhance the results over time.

“It’s a tremendous motivator for people looking to become more healthy and fit,” saidJack Lalane at 29 years old! FitnessAge spokesman Jack La Lanne, “This is truly a remarkable system for gauging fitness and motivating people to get in shape,” La Lanne added.

When this 85-year-old fitness pioneer wrote in his 1995 book Revitalize Your Life After 50: “I’m eightysomething and feel the same as when I was thirtysomething,” he was a little off the mark. After completing the FitnessAge assessment his fitness age was 29!

What’s Your FitnessAge

In late 1997, FitnessAge set out to change the course of fitness. Although fitness equipment sales were at an all-time high, the incidence of heart disease, obesity and serious health concerns was rising faster than at any other time in history. Breakthroughs in technology and in the fitness industry offered endless opportunities for individuals to assess their health level and develop better habits, yet few embraced them. Real change was not taking place, and it was clear that a revolutionary approach to physical fitness and personal well being was needed.

Realizing that in order for any individual to make long-term health changes, a simple and meaningful fitness assessment was the key to motivation. FitnessAge is a catalyst for real change. Developed in conjunction with leading exercise scientists, their software is fast becoming the benchmark for fitness measurement because it's the first physical assessment that translates scientific data into results that anyone can instantly understand.

FitnessAge began installing their custom designed www-connected kiosk units in July 1999. As of September of 1999 they had over 60 licensed locations, and are currently backlogged 8-12 weeks for new installations.

FitnessAge Development

The FitnessAge software was developed in conjunction with Robert O. Voy M.D., former Director of Sports Medicine for the US Olympics, and Lawrence A. Golding Ph.D., a leading exercise physiologist, distinguished university professor and American College of Sports Medicine Journal - Editor in Chief, and author of the National YMCA Physical Fitness Program. Dr Golding's benchmark study of over 60,000 individuals provided the raw physiological data on which the patented FitnessAge software is based.

“A traditional fitness assessment can be quite confusing, and even a little daunting.” explains FitnessAge chairman and CEO Ross Lyndon-James. “The average person doesn’t really understand, for example, what a recovery rate, BMI score or VO2 max is, let alone have the capacity to assess whether theirs is a good or bad result. But if a 45-year-old sees that their FitnessAge is 60, he or she instantly knows they need to work on closing that gap.” And conversely, a stellar result like Jack La Lanne’s reinforces the merits of a consistent health and fitness regime.

This multimedia software uses time-tested assessment methods to measure a person's body composition (body fat), cardio-respiratory condition (heart and lung fitness), flexibility and muscular strength. These four components are the universally accepted determinants of a person's overall physical condition.

Scientific formulae were developed to instantly compute an age for each of the four categories, which essentially show how a person's results compare with the national population averages in these areas. These results are combined to instantly calculate a FitnessAge at-a-glance fitness indicator.

As FitnessAge ads say, “FitnessAge Know it. Lower it.”
