He’s gorgeous. He’s
funny. He’s famous. And yes, he does yoga. Bryan Kest, who many of
us consider to be the movie star of the yoga world, was at MBS last
month to host two intensive classes.
The turnout both Tuesday evening and Wednesday
morning was amazing—filled to capacity. Bryan is the host of the
famous Power Yoga series and runs a very successful studio in Santa
Monica. He’s 38 year old and has been practicing yoga for 22 years.
He was one of the first Americans to tackle Ashtanga yoga, the
father of Power Yoga. He and his brother, Jonny, like the Swenson
brothers, are icons in the yoga community.
So, it’s no wonder that folks from all over
flocked to our studio to take his classes. But Bryan is not just
about yoga and form. I think what really draws people to his
presence is that he’s Bryan.
He’s funny—sometime crude—but always
entertaining.
“I believe in living my yoga,” Bryan says.
“It’s a matter of finding balance in your life just as you seek
balance on the mat.”
Bryan encouraged us to work at “50 percent”
capacity and not to “blow yourselves out.”
He emphasizes the simplicity of the poses.
“Don’t make it look like work,” he says. “All
you’re doing is putting your head to your knee. This is not
contortion.”
Leslie Glickman, co-owner of the club and an
excellent yoga teacher in her own right,
invited Bryan because she considers him as her mentor.
“I love the lightness in his yoga,” she says.
“It’s about having fun while you’re practicing.”
Personally, the two and a half-hour class went
by too fast. I would have loved to spend more time with Bryan whom
as he ages, seems to be a much more seasoned teacher.
You can tell that he’s devoted to his personal
journey as well as teaching others because according to his
philosophy, the best teacher is within you.
Bryan is expanding his workshop and retreat
schedule to include classes in Europe. He’ll be back in Boca, at
Yoga South, this coming Thanksgiving.
